Early retirement at 55. Or 65. Finally life can start. “Seniors” have their future, it’s a good period, a period to enjoy. Look at your colleagues, still involved with family, spinning around, whispering, having discussions in the corridors and at the coffee machine. Robert is retiring, or taking an early retirement.

What can they give him as a retirement gift? A new laptop? A mobile phone? An IPod? No, you don’t understand. He’s leaving. He’s not going to work part time, or one third of the time, or on the black market or even “from time to time”. He’s not going to “use his experience to train younger people” or “augment his pension”. Goodbye, he’s already buckling up his rucksack and his walking boots to stride out along the footpaths. He’s already bought his tools to dig his garden without giving himself backache. He’s lready packed his rod and net to go fishing for rainbow trout.

To the great discomfort of his family and his friends at work the list is full of retirement gift that they know he will never use. He has a well paid job and has spent his career taking up all the offers of interesting hobbies suggested by the various men’s magazines.

What to do in another life, other than what you missed out in the first one?
Robert is a “repressed host” a creative gourmet chef who misses cooking and feasting in restaurants. He’s passionate about discovering new tastes and flavours-“Flavours”?!?

It’s his sister Nicola who had the idea. An article she read in the food magazine “Flavours”.
It seems that in a corner of the Cevennes , near Montpellier in a splendid old 16th century house an association – Miam Miam – organizes spice cookery courses! Of course!

This is exactly what Robert would like! A weekend of introduction to cumin, nutmeg and cardamom… Everything you’ve never dared to ask about curries, coriander and hot peppers. What dishes they are used with, how to prepare them, how to buy good quality and how to store them. A weekend of devising simple original and tasty recipes of salads, fish, vegetables, poultry and grilled meats for tasting with your friends… A voyage through Lebanon, Indonesia China and Turkey without leaving Aulas in the gard department…

That’s it, everybody is happy. It worked really well. €280 for two days of training (€400 if you want to invite your partner) between siestas’s and walks in the countryside. That’s not counting the profit that Roberts friends make when they next gather around his dinner table.
